The First District Appellate Project is hiring one full-time staff attorney. Join us in the rewarding work of representing indigent parties in the California Courts of Appeal in criminal, delinquency, child dependency, and civil commitment appeals.

FDAP is a hybrid office with staff working in the office twice per week; a full-remote schedule would be considered for particularly strong candidates.
Primary responsibilities:
- training the next generation of appellate panel attorneys by mentoring them in their case work, creating resource materials on new laws and cases, and presenting at seminars;
- supporting experienced and more senior attorneys in their case work;
- direct representation of clients.
Job prerequisites:
- a minimum of 3 years experience handling cases in the California Courts of Appeal (equivalent experiences will be considered);
- experience must include 5 or more direct appeals with opening briefs filed (not including no-issue appeals);
- comfort with public speaking, both at oral argument and as a speaker at training events;
- exemplary research and writing skills;
- excellent technological proficiency: FDAP is a paperless office. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, the use of electronic transcripts, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic technology problems is necessary.
Compensation:
Starting salary will depend on experience and will be in the range of $100,000-$140,000.

Administrative Assistant Position
The First District Appellate Project (FDAP), a congenial 13-attorney, public interest law firm specializing in criminal and juvenile appeals, seeks a well-organized person with a strong work ethic, great attention to detail, commitment to social justice, and advanced computer skills to provide administrative assistant duties. This full-time position coordinates with a team of seven staff members supporting FDAP’s mission. This position has a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of two days per week in the office.
The position requires a welcoming temperament, exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, and clear communication with attorneys, support staff, and the public.
FDAP is conveniently-located at Oakland City Center, adjacent to the 12th Street BART Station.
Primary responsibilities:
Processing incoming/outgoing electronic and paper documents, data entry, answering calls, maintaining office-wide calendars, filing, welcoming visitors, and other tasks as assigned.
Preferred Experience
Experience and facility with VoIP, network organization, Adobe Acrobat (Pro), Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace (G Suite) (especially spreadsheets), and Zoom meeting and webinar setup are preferred.
An ability to lift 25 pounds and handle a fast-paced work day with frequent interruptions is required.
Compensation:
$25-30 per hour depending on experience
